Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
