Crew Member Discloses Depression After Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The self-operating spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a Amazon founder.
